Bruce Springsteen Stayin’ Alive

Every year at this time I have to leave the warmth and beauty of Manizales to head into Northern winter to recruit teachers for the coming school year.  While I do enjoy the interviews and find myself fortunate to be able to promote our school, city, and country, it is never an easy trip.  The cold, the dryness, problems with travel due to weather, and the bleak landscapes can take their toll.  We won’t even mention the effect that huge food portions and sitting in interviews all day has on my fitness level.

At the same time, however, I also get to engage in multiple conversations with educators from Canada, the U.S.A. and around the world.  It is fascinating to listen to the perspective various educators have and how they enact their craft.  I can interview ten teachers in a day, ask all of them the same question, and receive ten different perspectives, all of which have value, all of which reflect the personal teaching style of the candidate, and a few of which amaze me.  It’s those that amazed me that will be joining us next year.

I think the process is kind of like listening to a well-known song that is being covered by different people.  I don’t even have to like the original, and I may have heard a lot of versions, but every now-and-then, the cover is remarkable.  The Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive” is a good example.  It is considered one of the Top 100 Singles of all time, but I’ve always thought it was “Just OK”, and I’ve heard a lot of bad versions over the years.  Added to which, when it comes to the Bee Gees, I’m not a fan.  I mean … look at them.

And yet, I just heard a cover of “Stayin’ Alive” done by Bruce Springsteen that was remarkable.  His approach to a song that I have heard time and time again made it something new and something absolutely engaging.  For the first time ever, I wanted to hear the song again; for the first time ever, I could appreciate the nuances and craft in its design.  He had taken something that was so standard and for which I had my own preconceptions and made it something completely new.  He had taken it apart, kept the essence, rebuilt it, and added his own style and flare to it

I think really, really good teaching is like that.  There are activities and lessons that have been taught time and time again.  Some of them might even be among the top 100 of all time.  Some have become almost like wedding songs that everyone knows, and which have lost their impact as a result.  Yet, when these same standards are reworked and performed by a master teacher, they come out in a completely new way that is nothing short of wondrous.  The remake is often much better than the original and something familiar can be rejuvenated and made engaging once again.

The ability to create and remake things so they are inspiring is the essence of good music and good teaching, and I am looking forward to both the remakes and originals that our new rock star teachers will be bringing to us next year.  We certainly didn’t travel to Iowa winter for the weather.

Me refiero a … pues … mírenlos.
